Women who come to me for a mommy makeover at my Fort Worth practice are usually excited about the idea of getting their pre-baby body back. However, they often share similar concerns about what the procedure entails and the length of the recovery period.
In this blog, I’ll guide you through the mommy makeover process from start to finish. You’ll learn what to expect during your consultation, operation, and recovery.
The Consultation
Your consultation is an important time for you to ask questions about your procedure and the results you can expect. It’s also a time to openly communicate with your surgeon and express your cosmetic concerns, worries, fears, and expectations about your surgery.
As a board-certified plastic surgeon in Fort Worth, my job is to listen and create a detailed surgical plan that will address your needs. I perform a thorough examination so I can make the best recommendations for your body shape. I’ll also discuss what is and isn’t possible from surgery and make sure you have realistic expectations about what a mommy makeover can do for you. I make every effort to ensure this process is comfortable and that you feel no pressure. I want you to feel informed and confident in your decisions.
Once the exam is complete, I create a detailed treatment plan that considers your anatomy, surgical goals, and personal wants and needs. I may recommend procedures like liposuction, tummy tuck, breast lift, or breast augmentation in Fort Worth as part of your plan.
The Operation
A mommy makeover always requires general anesthesia and is performed as an outpatient procedure, which means that you can go home the same day. Many patients opt to stay overnight however, and are discharged early the next morning. Whether you plan to stay overnight or not, you’ll want to make sure you have a support person who can drive you to and from your appointment and take care of you when you get home.
You should arrive to your surgery at least 1 hour early. You’ll receive instructions on how to care for yourself after your procedure, and be asked a few questions about your medical history. Once you are cleared and prepped for surgery, an IV will be placed, and you’ll receive general anesthesia.
The length of your surgery will depend on which and how many procedures you have performed. Usually, I perform a combination of breast and body procedures that target the areas of the body most affected by childbirth. However, mommy makeovers aren’t just for moms, and you can choose from many different surgical combinations.
The Recovery
Immediately after your procedure, you will feel groggy and sore. This is normal and to be expected. You will receive pain medication to ease any discomfort. When you return home, try to rest as much as possible and let your body heal.
You will meet with me the first week after surgery so I can assess how you are healing. You’ll also be fitted with compression garments to reduce swelling and help your body conform to its new shape. These garments should be worn consistently for several weeks to safeguard your results.
After about 1 to 2 weeks, you’ll have another appointment and have your incisions checked. You may also have any external stitches removed. After the second week, most patients can return to office work. However, those with more physically demanding jobs may need to wait longer.
Within 6 weeks, most of my patients are able to resume their normal activities, including exercise. Swelling is usually fully resolved by this point, but it may take 3 months or more to completely disappear. Your final results make take several months to show, but most women feel very confident and happy with their new appearance at this time.
