It’s one of the most well-known axioms in the English language—”too good to be true.” Plastic surgery patients are right to raise a skeptical eyebrow when they hear phrases such as “scarless breast augmentation” because any incision leaves a scar. So, is there such a thing as a 24-hour recovery breast augmentation? At our Fort Worth, Texas, practice, it’s not a marketing gimmick.
Some of the world’s most respected plastic surgeons use techniques that can reduce recovery time following breast augmentation—which are sometimes called rapid recovery, flash recovery, or 24-hour recovery breast augmentation. I’ve refined my own process for breast augmentation patients, beginning with the consultation, using advanced surgical techniques, and then taking it to the next level by refining our post-op protocols.
The concept of rapid recovery breast augmentation stems from research conducted in the early 2000s when a pair of plastic surgeons detailed a series of steps that standardized and refined breast augmentation for more predictable results. They demonstrated in peer-reviewed papers that using these steps led to shorter recovery times for more than 90% of the breast augmentation patients involved in the study.
Patient Education Is Key
During the consultation with a breast augmentation patient, I explain the specific techniques and post-op instructions that contribute to a reduced recovery time. I truly enjoy explaining to patients the specific steps I take to minimize the risk of complications and enable patients to return to normal activities the day after the surgery. Some of the points I make include:
- Using the inframammary incision (underneath the breast crease) has the lowest risk of infection.
- Pre-op preparation begins the day before surgery by taking medications such as anti-inflammatories.
- Anesthesia protocols are designed to minimize nausea.
- I use the Keller Funnel in every case to avoid touching the implants. This technique reduces the chance of infection.
- Meticulous techniques and highly specialized instruments limit damage to the skin or surrounding tissue.
- The use of a long-acting local anesthetic during surgery limits patient discomfort after the operation and helps them avoid needing narcotic pain medication.
- Apply a water-proof barrier to incisions that protects them and allows patients to shower earlier.
We’ll also discuss your breast implant options during your consultation. Most of our patients prefer the highly cohesive silicone gel breast implants—often called “gummy bear” implants—because of the natural-looking shape and feel they create.
It’s important to note that not all plastic surgeons are experienced with these techniques and may even downplay the idea of a one-day recovery. A 24-hour recovery doesn’t mean that you can resume strenuous workouts the day after breast augmentation, but you can expect to drive a car, return to work, and hold small children in your lap if you closely follow my post-op instructions.
