Labiaplasty in Fort Worth with Dr. Camp

Woman in her underwear considering a labiaplasty

At my plastic surgery practice in Fort Worth, TX, I commonly perform labiaplasty on patients for improvement of function and appearance of the female genital region.  This procedure can be comfortably performed under local anesthesia in the office or under general anesthesia.

Labiaplasty procedures became quite popular in our practice with mommy makeover patients who were among the first patients that brought their concerns and desire to treat the area.  Although the topic is not widely discussed and is understandably difficult to bring up, our scientific journals indicate that labiaplasty has satisfaction rates that are greater than 90-95%, meaning this is an important surgical procedure to offer to women of all ages, whether or not they have had children.

As a result of my busy mommy makeover practice, I became very experienced with labiaplasty techniques.  In this post, I will share my insights into surgical vaginal rejuvenation procedures available at Steven Camp MD Plastic Surgery & Aesthetics.

Why Choose Labiaplasty?

Common reasons for patients to seek labiaplasty includes excess protrusion that creates discomfort in clothing, exercise, and intimate issues.

The operation treats common vaginal functional issues like moisture, dryness, chafing, pain, and irritation. It also improves the appearance of the labia, creating a “tucked-in” and youthful appearance.

It has become commonplace to include this procedure as part of the Complete Mommy Makeover at my practice. In addition to mommy makeover patients, many young patients that have not had pregnancies have concerns with their labia and report cosmetic concerns and issues with sexual dysfunction.

The most common reason for seeking labiaplasty is dissatisfaction with labial appearance. Other common concerns are discomfort or pain during sexual activity, general irritation, and issues related to hygiene or infection. Functionality problems related to large or asymmetric labia can include pain while wearing tight clothing or during athletic activities. In addition, psychological distress can result from an undesirable aesthetic appearance.

Labiaplasty Techniques

There are several labiaplasty techniques used by surgeons to reshape and reduce the size of the labia minora. The most common techniques are the “wedge technique” and the “edge/ trim technique.”

Wedge Technique for Labiaplasty

  • Generally a faster surgery with a shorter incision.
  • Well suited for treating the anterior 1/3 of the labia.
  • May shorten the anteroposterior length of the labia, particularly with excess posterior tissues.
  • Preserves the edge and appearance of the labia, retaining the tissue’s natural pigment.
  • Some surgeons indicate this technique preserves more sensation, but this has not been clinically proven.

Edge/ Trim Technique for Labiaplasty

  • Treats the anterior, middle, and posterior portions of the labia.
  • Improved wound healing compared to other techniques.
  • Less potential for loss of blood flow to the labia after surgery.
  • Sensation is preserved at the edge of the labia tissue.

Nonsurgical Vaginal Rejuvenation Treatments

We have started recently offering the “O-Shot®” to patients.  The O-Shot, or Orgasm Shot, is a nonsurgical procedure that uses a patient’s own blood to rejuvenate the vaginal and clitoral tissues. The cells from your blood is injected into the clitoris and the O-Spot, or upper vaginal area. The cells contain growth factors that help stimulate tissue regeneration and heal injuries. The body absorbs the nutrients from the injected cells, which can lead to increased sensitivity, stronger orgasms, and improved sexual function. The O-Shot can also help with urinary incontinence, vaginal dryness, and sexual dysfunction disorders like dyspareunia and female orgasmic disorder.

The O-Shot is generally safe and painless, with minimal discomfort and no downtime. Most women experience positive results within days or weeks, but the full effects can take up to three months to appear. The O-Shot typically lasts 12–18 months.

The 8 Key Value-Added Benefits of Vaginal Rejuvenation at Our Practice

  1. Very few physicians have both the ability to diagnose and treat issues related to function and appearance of the female genital area.  Additionally, I am uniquely trained in vaginal rejuvenation and able to offer highly specialized surgical techniques to improve the cosmetic appearance of enlarged or disproportionate labia.
  2. Labiaplasty techniques have evolved in the last several years and are now highly effective procedures that provide physical functional benefits, improved overall emotional well-being, and confidence to patients concerned with appearance of their labia.  Recent fashion trends (leggings and yoga pants) and the increased focus on exercise in our culture have made the cosmetic appearance of the labia important to many women.
  3. Dr. Camp’s unique and specialized approach to labiaplasty avoids problems with slow or unfavorable healing.
  4. Surgical labiaplasty treatment is durable and expected to provide lasting cosmetic results (usually for your lifetime).
  5. Attention to restoration of the appropriate form and function of the tissue are the foundation of my surgical training and why it is so important to choose an expert plastic surgeon.  Preservation of nerves and appropriate skin and tissue to the area is possible in the hands of highly skilled plastic surgeons trained to work on all these structures.  A traditional OB/Gyn or surgeon trained in other subspecialties do not typically have the experience and nuanced anatomical knowledge of these structures.
  6. Many techniques exist to remove excess labial tissue. The most common labiaplasty approach is called the “edge resection technique.” I rarely perform this type of resection because it often fails to recreate the smoothness of the labia as it approaches the clitoral hood skin.
  7. I prefer the “edge and wedge combination technique” which allows for limited scarring and continued smoothness along the labial edge toward the clitoral hood.  It harnesses the benefits of both procedures, decreasing the size and length of labia and still allowing smooth transition from the labia to the clitoral hood.
  8. Recovery protocol is specialized and detailed.  Steps to ensure healing and smooth recovery include specific instructions provided by our office.  We will meet with you at your consultation, provide an in-person preoperative appointment with our nurses a few weeks before surgery and stay in close contact with you after surgery via text, phone and in-person follow-up visits.
